Second Time's the Charm?

We all know that the writing in a comic strip is important. But even more important, oftentimes, is the rewriting. Generally, this happens before the drawing stage. You write your gag; you polish it; you draw it.

I wrote a gag for EEK! that I thought was funny. I then drew it, inked it and began to letter it. Suddenly, I didn't like the joke. Something just wasn't quite...there.

So I started rewriting -- after I'd completed the strip. I labored over several different jokes and approaches, until a gag just popped into my head (as gags sometimes do, bless their little hearts).

The result, I think, is a funny joke, certainly better than the first one I wrote.

You be the judge.

I like the rewrite. Nice tribute to Good Fellas.
I know what you mean about starting with one gag and mid stream a much better one just pops out of nowhere. Wierd.

The second one is great. Much better than the original version, nice work.

I agree, the second is funnier and has more character.

This one hasn't run yet; does GoComics object to you posting it? I guess they don't, as you did.

Thanks, Richard!

I guess I shouldn't post strips before they appear on the site. I didn't think to ask Go Comics.

Shhhh....

p.s. I'm really enjoying Cul de Sac!

Hey! I wouldn't tell, and I like seeing the early stuff with the thought procees behind it.

And thanks, I'm enjoying EEEK!
